What are Personal Development Activities?

I’m often asked by my clients what I recommend as being the best personal development resources that they can use with their employees.  I run them through my list of 10 well tried and tested resources, which I will go through with you now.

1.On the Job Training

This is a very simple, well used and time-tested way of imparting knowledge and skills to a new job holder in particular.

2. Face to Face Coaching

Face to face coaching helps to grow an individual’s knowledge and skills and to provide them with fresh insights into their personal development.

3. Non Face to Face Coaching

Coaching does not have to be face-to-face and taking place in the same place at the same time, it can be done remotely using digital methodologies.  So, for example, we have e-coaching which is done via email, coaching that can be undertaken using Skype, in a meeting or other platforms which can be used clearly with laptops with tablets and through the use of mobile phones.

4. Instructor Led Training Courses

These are face-to-face events where the individual learns live in conjunction with a number of people in the same room. This is a  very conventional, well tried and tested way of delivering training courses.

5. Virtual Classrooms

Virtual classrooms, webinars, virtual learning environments by learning communities and other online methodologies are growing considerably these days because they are extremely powerful and very cost effective, particularly if you are training and developing global populations of people.

6. E-learning

E-learning has been around for many years and it’s the resource available to people to acquire knowledge and skills either in the workplace or in their own time.  It’s a flexible, adaptable way or working toward a qualification or imparting knowledge and skills. A remote environment can be very powerful these days, particularly when you use some of the most up-to-date technologies to make them really engaging and highly participative and it can be very practical.

7. Material Resources

Material resources are things such as books, guided reading programs, or of course the many online resources such as video blogs, audio blogs and articles that people can acquire or download. There are an enormous amount of different learning and development resources that people can acquire both online and in a physical sense so I always like to equip employees with as many of those as I can or direct them to as many of those as I can.

8. Job Shadowing

Job shadowing is all about enabling an individual to spend time with another individual, day in day out, over a period of time, watching what they’re doing, learning what they’re doing and being prepared, perhaps, for that individuals job. The individual can grow their skills over a period of time in conjunction with their current job or they can be seconded into a department or a team for a few months at a time.  Perhaps they can move around the organization, just as graduates do,  and they can learn all about the organization from different angles and find out which part the organization they may be best suited to working in.

9. Project Involvement

Projects can provide extremely powerful personal development experiences. The individual isn’t necessarily a project leader or manager, but they can take part in a project team and broaden their knowledge, their skills, their insights, the processes that the organization uses to grow and develop the organization and that can be a very powerful way of growing the individual.

10. Mentoring

Having an external mentor can help individuals gain fresh insight and can also help them to progress in their career and personal development by learning from their mentors experiences.
